Frequently Asked Questions

1

❓ Do I need an ATAR to get into healthcare?

No! There are plenty of alternative pathways into healthcare through TAFE, bridging programs, or mature-age entry. You can even work in a health role first, then move into university later.

2

❓ What if I didn’t do science subjects in high school?

That’s okay—some courses have bridging options or foundation years. You can also study science basics through TAFE before moving into a degree.

3

❓ Can I become a doctor if I didn’t go straight to uni after high school?

Yes! You can study another degree first, then apply for postgraduate medicine using the GAMSAT, like I did. Life experience and maturity are a big advantage.

4

❓ Are there special entry options for rural or Indigenous students?

Yes. Many WA universities have rural and Indigenous entry schemes with adjusted requirements, extra support, and dedicated places in programs like medicine and nursing.

5

❓ Is it expensive to study healthcare?

It can be, but there are lots of scholarships—especially for rural and Indigenous students. Some also offer help with living costs, travel, and accommodation.

6

❓ What healthcare jobs are most needed in the Pilbara?

There’s strong demand for doctors, nurses, Aboriginal Health Workers, and allied health professionals like physios, speech pathologists, and radiographers.
